These are the 36 possible dice combinations.
Of these there are 15 opening moves, remember, its not possible to start with a double in backgammon. These opening moves can be categorised as follows; building rolls, slotting rolls, blocking rolls and splitting rolls.
Building Rolls: 5-4: 4-3: 5-2: 3-2.
Slotting Rolls: 2-1: 4-1: 5-1.
Blocking Rolls: 3-1: 4-2: 5-3: 6-1.
Splitting Rolls: 6-2: 6-3: 6-4.
and lets not forget
Lovers leap: 6-5.

Notation
If you want to record your game here is how. Above is an illustration of a backgammon board with the points numbered 1-24. In this illustration the home tables are to the left. Moves are simply recorded by naming the number point that your checker is on followed by a forward slash and the number of the point your checker has landed on. 12/14. Doubles are recorded in much the same way as in 12/14(2) to indicate that you have moved two checkers.With a double if you moved all four checkers separately thenyou would record it as, 1/5, 9/13,14/18, 11/15. If when making your move you land on your opponents blot and make a hit then you would record that as 12/14*
